Fruit Group (2552)
The pyramid recommends 2 cups of fruit per day. Serving sizes for fruits are one medium apple, banana or orange; ½ cup fruit or ¾ cup of 100% fruit juice. Younger children may need smaller serving sizes.
Fruits and fruit juices are important sources of vitamins, the mineral potassium, and fiber. They are low in fat and sodium. Increased fruit and vegetable consumption helps reduce your risk for cancer and heart disease.
Here are some selection tips for fruits:
- Eat whole fruits often—they are higher in fiber than fruit juices.
- Have citrus fruits, melons, and berries regularly, they are important sources of vitamin C. Vitamin C keeps your gums healthy, and helps your body heal wounds and cuts.
- Count only 100% fruit juices as fruit. Punches, ades, and most fruit “drinks” contain only a little fruit juice and lots of added sugars. Grape and orange sodas do not count as fruit juice. Check food labels to make sure you are getting 100% juice.
