Using the food guide pyramid (2557)

The food guide pyramid illustrates the research-based food guidance system developed by USDA.  It goes beyond the basics to help you put the Dietary Guidelines into action.

The Pyramid is based on USDA’s research on what foods Americans eat, what nutrients are in these foods, and how to make the best food choices for you.  It also includes recommendations for physical activity, and there is a special food guide pyramid for children.

The Food Guide Pyramid is an outline of what to eat each day based on the Dietary Guidelines.  The Pyramid calls for eating a variety of foods with the nutrients you need and the right amount of calories to maintain healthy weight.

The food guide pyramid emphasizes foods from six major food groups.  Each of these food groups provides some, but not all, of the nutrients you need.  Foods in one group can’t replace those in another.  No one food group is more important than another.

Eating according to the pyramid can help you 1) limit the fat in your diet to less than 30% of your total calories, and 2) get plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Research shows that good nutrition can help reduce the risk for illness.  Try following the food guide pyramid for healthy eating!
