Avoiding Dehydration (2801)

Dehydration is a common and largely preventable problem for many older adults. In fact, a recent study showed that dehydration was one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization among people over the age of 65.

As people age, they often lose their sense of thirst. Some people become dehydrated because they limit their intake of fluids in order to lessen the difficulties associated with urinary incontinence. Others become dehydrated as a side effect of certain medications or when they are struck by diseases that cause vomiting or diarrhea.

Symptoms of dehydration may be overlooked because they are associated with many different medical problems. Fatigue, headache, dry nasal passages, cracked lips and even mental confusion can be signs of dehydration.

Most people, including older adults, need to consume eight or more cups of water a day. Medications or illness can increase this water requirement. Contrary to some beliefs, the water that is found in liquids like coffee, milk and juice can fill part of this water requirement. Most fruits and vegetables also have a significant amount of water.

If you suspect dehydration in an older adult, check with a doctor for medical advice.
