Active play for the four year old (1064)
The four-year-old is often a big help around the house and likes to try out different "roles". Encourage dramatic play by providing props and clothing. Keep an assortment of items that will spark his imagination.
The fine motor skills at this age are quite good and your child may enjoy craft activities such as stringing beads. Children of this age like to use scissors and glue. They have a longer attention span and may spend considerable time building complex block structures.
Four-year-olds are increasing in coordination and enjoy climbing on a jungle gym, pedaling small bikes, and jumping. They are able to walk on a low balance beam and can balance on one foot.
Games and puzzles are enjoyed by four-year-olds. These children are able to spend longer amounts of time working on one project. Make sure you have plenty of crayons, markers, and paint on hand for them to express their creativity. They also enjoy sand and water play.
Simple science activities with magnifying glasses, magnets, and other simple tools provide hours of fun for this age group. They are fascinated by simple things like earthworms and insects.
Books are important to the four-year-old, who can often read a few words and repeat familiar parts of favorite books. Take a trip to the library to show your child a wide assortment of books. Look up subjects he is interested in. Avoid letting her spend too much time in front of the television or with video games. Instead, look for active play and opportunities for her to socialize with other children.
